Forget What Other People Think

Proverbs 29:25 says, “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” A snare by definition is a trap. Similarly, Galatians 1:10 says, “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

These verses give us a key lesson for today: No matter what we do, if we work for the approval of other people, it will never be good enough. People will always have high expectations that are impossible to meet. God, however, knows everything about us. We cannot disappoint God because He is the director of every move we make. What if, for one day, we lived as if we were only trying to please God and nobody else? Maybe we’d handle our finances in a more mature way. Maybe we’d commit to remaining sexually pure. Above all, we’d certainly strive to imitate Him in a better way.

So today, that is the challenge. We must ask the Holy Spirit to heighten our awareness of His Presence today, and act like He is watching us. He is there to guide us. He is there to challenge us to live a more holy life. With our trust being solely in Him and only seeking to please Him, we will have His approval. That needs to be our number one priority.

Reflect:

  • Do you find yourself trying to win the approval of others instead of God? What might you do differently if you worried less about the approval of others and more about the approval of God?
  • What is one thing you can do to stop trying to please people and instead, start pleasing God?
