Freedom Philosophy

What is freedom? Is it the ability to do whatever I want whenever I want to? Or is it the ability to do the right thing? What is sexual freedom? Is it having as many sex partners as I can have? Or is it having the right sexual partner? Our culture tells us that freedom is a life without rules, and sexual freedom is sexual excess. But what if our understanding of freedom is all wrong? What if proper rules and boundaries define true freedom? This is exactly the philosophy we find in God’s word.

In the beginning, God created sex is for the mutual pleasure and procreation of a husband and wife. God made Adam and Eve for one another, and He told them to be fruitful and multiply. God thought of sex, so our highest enjoyment of it will always be according to His plan. Why marriage? Sex requires the greatest vulnerability and lack of inhibition in partners, and marriage, as God intended it, is the best environment to build lasting trust and fellowship with another human being. It is to be an unbreakable covenant.

The Bible tells us that whomever we offer ourselves to obey, that is the one we are enslaved to (Romans 6:16). We can be slaves to our own appetites. We can be slaves to sex. That is what sin is, slavery to a nature we can’t help but obey—apart from Jesus Christ. True freedom, scripture teaches us, is found no other way. Jesus breaks the power of sin in our lives through His death on the cross; and when we believe in Him, we overcome sin by His resurrection life inside of us. It is only through Christ’s power that we have the ability to live holy lives. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1).
