The Israelites had experiences they were commanded to pass on. From the moment they set out from Egypt to the day they approached the promised land, they saw God work in miraculous ways to save them from Egyptian slavery. They were the recipients of God’s law given to Moses.

In Deuteronomy, Moses challenged the Israelites and modern believers to never forget what God has done. “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live.” The second part of the verse commands, “Teach them to your children and to their children after them.”

As we retell God’s mighty works in our lives, we minister to ourselves and those around us. Our faith is strengthened as we’re reminded of God’s faithfulness. At the same time, we’re filling the next generation with knowledge of the one true God. Better than any other inheritance, our stories, memories and experiences with the Lord are a vital gift we can give to our children.
