Isn’t following Jesus supposed to be easy?

Have you ever bought a piece of furniture or a new toy to put together, and the box makes it seem as if it will be very simple to put together. But, then you open it, and what falls out is a million tiny pieces with an encyclopedia of an instruction manual?

Many people who go from death to life when they trust Jesus as Savior think the “following Him” part will be very simple and the Christian life is an easy road to walk. However, here’s a little secret: Following Jesus is not easy.

Paul knew it better than anyone.

As Christians, we may be falsely accused as Paul expected he would be for changing his plans, or we may be struggling with sin as the Corinthians were, but it is not in our own strength or through the faith of others that we are able to stand firm for Jesus (2 Corinthians 1:21-22 and 2 Corinthians 1:24). We can do all things through Christ who gives us strength (Philippians 4:13).

As we read God's Word and seek His voice in prayer, He will lead us to our next step.

God will allow us to experience more than we can handle without Him. But as we read His Word and seek His voice in prayer, He will lead us one step at a time —even if our next step requires faith in something we can’t see yet (Hebrews 11:1).

It is the fulfillment of God’s promises through Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit in us that give us the power to stand firm in our faith, overcome trials, and follow Jesus. While the path may not be easy, you will never walk alone. God's Word and His Spirit are with us every step along the way. That's how we know the best is yet to come.

Reflect:

  • What are you walking through right now that requires faith in something you can’t see yet? Are you having trouble believing God’s promises?
  • Who can you talk to that will encourage you in your faith?
  • Have you gotten connected through serving at NewSpring or with a NewSpring Group so that you don’t have to do life alone?

If you would like someone to talk and pray with you about what you’re going through, stop by the Care Room at your campus on Sunday, or connect with someone here.
