Joyful Honey Buns

Recently my son made friends with two sweet boys from Russia.  After an afternoon football game, the boys commented that they were hungry so I gave them a box of Little Debbie Honey Buns.  The boys had no idea what a honey bun even was. From the very first bite, they were delighted!  You would have thought that I presented them with a piece of sugary dough straight from Heaven.  In the United States a honey bun seems like a simple snack that we take for granted, but for two boys who have never tasted them before, it was like giving them pure gold.  I was glad to give the boys something that made them so happy, because I experienced God’s love from the sweet joy that they expressed.

The Bible has a lot to say about the issue of giving.  One of the most detailed passage on giving is found in 2 Corinthians 8-9.  Paul, the author of Corinthians, gives us a summary on how and why believers should give.  We find in 2 Corinthians 8:12 that we should give to others willingly. “For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.”  All believers should give freely and cheerfully to contribute to the cause of Christ because saved people serve people, and you can't out-give God.

Giving is especially important because it tests the sincerity of our love for God.  The Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 8:8, “I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others.” Generosity is the result of sincere love, and cheerful givers enjoy the blessing of being able to serve others for the cause of Christ.

  • How generous do you consider yourself to be?
  • How might God be calling you to be more generous?
