Living for Jesus brings freedom

When we think of freedom, we generally imagine having no limitations. Being free means we can do what we want, when we want, and how we want. None of us liked being told to clean our room or do our homework. We don’t like having limitations placed on our life.

When we think of following Jesus as something that limits our freedom, it becomes a scary thing. However, John 5:19-24 says following Jesus actually brings freedom to our life.

Because of Jesus’ unity with God, he lived as God wanted him to live, and He died for all sinners. Because of our relationship with Jesus, we honor Him and live as He would want us to live. Since we love Jesus and know what He sacrificed to bring us unity with Him, we want to live in a way that pleases Him.

Following Jesus brings freedom from death and from our sinful natures.

It seems counterintuitive that we would find our most vibrant, best lives following someone instead of making our own decisions. Doesn’t freedom mean living with no one to tell us what to do? John 5:24 (MSG) says the person who honors Jesus, “has taken a giant step from the world of the dead to the world of the living.” Following Jesus brings freedom from death and from our sinful natures, which want things that aren’t good for us. Jesus wants to give us things that are good for us.

If a child desires a piece of candy, but his mother denies him that candy, he feels like the world is falling apart. However, his mother smiles because she knows he will get a big bowl of ice cream after dinner. She knows there’s more in store for him than he can imagine. The child is not without freedom. He is being guided by a loving mother who wants to give him more.

Just as the Father loves the Son and allows Him to do greater works (John 5:20), the Son loves us and expands our view of what living can be.
