Looking for an Answer

Often, our first response to things going awry is to demand answers from God. This is how Job felt when he says, “If only I knew where to find Him; if only I could go to His dwelling! I would state my case before Him and fill my mouth with arguments. I would find out what He would answer me, and consider what He would say to me. Would He vigorously oppose me? No, He would not press charges against me” (Job 23:3-6).

Job knew he hadn’t done anything to deserve the suffering he was experiencing and he wanted to understand why. Eventually God answers him, but Job doesn’t get quite the response he was expecting.

“Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge?” God asks. “Will the one will the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him? Let him who accuses God answer Him!”

As soon as God speaks, Job’s attitude changes. He very quickly realizes that God is God and he is not. Job replies, “I am unworthy—how can I reply to You? I put my hand over my mouth. I spoke once, but I have no answer—twice, but I will say no more.”

Finally he says, “Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know…My ears had heard of You, but now my eyes have seen You. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:3-6).

Like Job, we need the change in perspective that comes with seeing God for who He is. While our understanding is limited by time and space, God is limited by nothing. God sees things that we don’t see. He knows what we don’t know, and His ways are higher than our ways.

No matter what our circumstances may be, we can face them with certainty when we understand that the Lord, who is in control of it all, is working on our behalf.
