Session 1

What it takes to be steadfast and faithful

From NewSpring at Home: A Study on Colossians

Scripture

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison — that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak...” - Colossians 4:2-4

Observation

Paul encourages the church to pray diligently and with a grateful heart. Continually re-aligning with Christ is what it takes to be steadfast and faithful. We cannot do better by simply trying harder. We need constant connection with Jesus to live out the Gospel.

Paul then asks the church to pray for him to have opportunities to share the Gospel and to know what to say. Finally, he instructs them to consider how they’re sharing the Gospel in their own circles — to think about how they’re living as well as what they’re saying.

Words can be easily misunderstood, especially in the supercharged emotional environment we live in. We need the Holy Spirit to guide us on how to speak or whether to remain silent in any interaction.

Paul doesn’t give us a formula for sharing the Gospel. Instead, Paul reminds us that if we have a gracious heart connected to God and are willing to be led by the Spirit, we’ll always know just what to say.

Application

  • When’s the last time you prayed for your words to make a difference instead of jumping right in?
  • What would it look like to approach today’s conversations with grace?

Prayer

Lord, help me to be mindful of how I speak and act. Help me avoid those who can cause divisions and create obstacles to understanding Scripture. Give me the wisdom to see smooth talk and flattery for what they are. Help me to grow in wisdom so I can discern between good and evil, knowing You will crush Satan and give me victory. Let me continue to walk in grace toward others, knowing you are with me always.
