Session 1
Where is your mind focused?
From NewSpring at Home: A Study on Colossians
Scripture
“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” - Colossians 3:2-3
Observation
We often only think about what awaits us in eternity when faced with death’s reality. But Paul is saying we should live every day with eternity in mind.
Eternal life began the moment we put our trust in Jesus. But while we’re still living on this earth, we’re consistently confronted with other priorities, other value systems.
So rather than setting our minds on things above, we find our minds pulled toward getting the best paying job, the nicest house, or the fanciest car. These things aren’t bad, but they aren’t what matters in God’s kingdom.
The kingdom values love, mercy, kindness, and humility. When we gave our lives to Jesus, our old selves died. We find our new lives with Jesus, chasing after what matters to Him.
Application
- What is your mind set on most of the time?
- Ask Jesus what He sees in that situation or area of your life. Where are there differences between what matters to you and what matters in eternity?
- How does time with the Lord help change your perspective on what you see?
Prayer
Father, help me to begin to see things through Jesus’ eyes. Give me strength and guidance to read your Word every day. Help me to have the insight and faith to see how my life here can reflect heaven. Help me to think on things that are pure and just and worthy of your praise.
