Nothing To Be Ashamed Of

In high school, kids called me a goody goody. I didn’t swear. I didn’t drink. I didn’t let people copy my homework. Though I sometimes felt like an outsider, my convictions generally outweighed my desire to fit in.

But in college, and even after, my desire to fit in grew stronger. Part of me was sick of not fitting in. I started to question, and sometimes squash, my own high standards.

What I’ve learned is that sometimes God wants us to stand out. When you surrender your life to God’s will, it looks different than living for your own selfish desires. When we show Christ through our actions, we stand out.

In 2 Timothy, Paul tells Timothy, “do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. He has saved us and called us to a holy life.” A few lines later, Paul writes, “... this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.”

When we know what we stand for is true, we can stand for it in confidence, in spite of jeers or suffering. So guard the truth of the gospel, and do not be ashamed to live it.
