Repentance Leads To Life

No matter what the prophets of Baal tried, they couldn’t light the fire. But the fire from the Lord consumed not only the bull, but also “the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water in the trench” (1 Kings 18:38).

Like 1 Kings, Psalm 135 highlights the impotence of false gods. Verses 15-17 say: “The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths.”  Verse 18 takes it a step further, saying that “Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.”

The Lord is the one true God. You may not be bowing down to wooden figures, but we’re all worshipping something. For some, it’s money. For others, it’s popularity. Anyone who puts their faith in anything other than the Lord God is doomed.

The good news is that God gave us the same gift that He gave the disciples when they believed in Jesus — repentance that leads to life (Acts 11:17-18). Instead of looking to idols to give your life meaning or sustenance, trust God to bring you fulfillment instead. No false god could light the fire in the Old Testament, and they can’t give you life now. Call on the Lord for your salvation, for the repentance leading to life. Like a fire,  He’ll not only consume your life but the lives of others as well.
