Session 11
Is He My Lord?
From Rich Toward God
Imagine someone gave you the keys to a brand new sports car and said, “I’m headed out of town for a while. Take good care of it!” You would probably find yourself at the car wash fairly often, making sure it’s squeaky clean. You would fill it with high-quality gas. If you took care of the car long enough, you’d even get the oil changed and the tires rotated. You definitely wouldn’t let trash pile up in the passenger seat, scratch the paint with careless parking, and finally return it to its rightful owner with an empty gas tank.
That’s what good stewardship looks like: taking care of something well, even though you know it ultimately doesn’t belong to you. And God, who has the right to the whole world because He created the whole world, gave us stewardship over what He owns. With this lens, it’s important to ask ourselves, “Am I a faithful steward of all that belongs to God?”
How we handle what belongs to the Lord says something about what we think about the Lord. If we see patterns of selfishness, control, and greed in our lives, we may not trust Him as the rightful owner of everything. But if we look inward and discover contentment, thankfulness, and generosity, that’s a good sign that we’re walking in joyful obedience as good stewards of our money, our stuff, and our lives—because it all belongs to God after all.
If you feel convicted by the fruit of your current stewardship habits, there’s good news. Today can be the day that you shift your perspective and your habits to align with God’s design. When you trust Him as the rightful owner, you can relax into an open-handed life of obedience and generosity, trusting Him to take care of you like the good Father He is.
REFLECT
- What does your current handling of the Lord’s stuff say about what you believe about the Lord?
- If you feel convicted today, what’s the next step God is asking you to take towards obedience in the area of stewardship?
