Run!

Have you ever chosen the buffet and suffered later because you ate more than you should? Have you ever gotten on the phone after hearing something about someone and found yourself gossiping minutes later? How often do we place ourselves in the way of temptation?

Proverbs 7 describes a young man who foolishly does the same thing. He walks toward the house of an adulterous woman, and shortly finds himself in her arms.

Every day we face temptation. Do we walk away from temptation or investigate it, convincing ourselves that we can handle the situation? Proverbs 7:4-5 reveals the key to resisting. “Say to wisdom, 'You are my sister,' and call understanding your kinsman; they will keep you from the adulteress.” Where does this kind of wisdom and understanding come from? Proverbs 2:6 says, “the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” James 1:5 states, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.“

Since we are to keep wisdom and understanding as our closest relatives, and God freely gives wisdom, let's be diligent to ask for it. Since the words of His mouth hold understanding and we have His Word, let’s spend time reading it every day. Doing these things will help us stay focused on Jesus and give us the courage to run away when temptation comes.

Reflect:

  • What is one temptation in your life that you find hard to resist?
  • Is there any place that you go, or thing that you do, that you need to avoid because you often give in to temptation when you go there, or do it?
  • What is one thing you can start doing today to help you resist temptation? Ask God for wisdom and then follow through on the next step that He gives you.
