Serve the One You’re With

“You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord; we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.” - Genesis 47:25

At some point, all of us have felt insignificant. Maybe you felt overlooked at work or left out at school. We would be hard pressed to find an honest person who has never looked at their hard work and wondered, “Does anyone even care?”

At many points in Joseph’s life, he probably felt the same way. But after slavery, prison and some serious family drama, Genesis 47 shows Joseph running the affairs of a massive empire. Seeing how God leads Joseph through low circumstances and into an incredibly blessed life should encourage us to serve God to the best of our ability in everything we do.

God used some of the lowest points in Joseph’s life to prepare him for one of the greatest. Before the food crisis, Joseph had run a prison and managed a mansion that was likely as big or bigger than Downton Abbey. Joseph never would have had those opportunities if he’d wasted his days crying, “Woe is me,” or “What’s the point?” Joseph didn’t let circumstances determine whether he would serve those around him with all of his heart. We’re called to do the same.

We may not understand, or even see the purpose in, every situation God sends our way. But we can trust that He has big plans for each of us. Ephesians 2:10 says, “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Every assignment, every job, every relationship is purposeful. Whenever we wholeheartedly serve those around us, we open ourselves up to the opportunity to do some of the “good works” God has been planning all along.

  • Think of an area of your life where you tend to dwell more on self-pity than how to be a better servant for God.  What can you do to better serve in this area?
  • Is there something you’re doing (or not doing) that is hindering your attitude from being that of a servant?  What is it, and what needs to be done to eliminate it from your life?
