Someone to Look Up To

People complain that our world is getting worse by the day. Philippians 3:18-19 describes a culture similar to ours. This passage describes a world that pursues happiness and satisfaction through the earthly, temporary things. Finding the right path to follow can be hard in a world where the voices of non-believers are often the loudest around us. It can be easy to shift our focus to earthly things we can see rather than eternal things that aren’t always visible.

Paul encourages Christians to remember their focus should always be on those things that are eternal (verses 20-21) and their identity is found in Christ. Earlier in the passage, Paul encourages believers to “join with others in following [his] example...and take note of those who live according to the pattern [they] gave [them]”  (v. 17).  Paul says one of the best ways to keep our eyes focused on Christ is to follow the example of those who are further along in their faith. When we are not sure of what we should do or when we need encouragement, we should look to these older believers for encouragement and prayer.

Reflect:

  • Do you have any other believers in your life whose example you follow? What makes that person an example in faith?
  • Are you in a small group or volunteering in an area of the church? These are great ways to find other believers to turn to for encouragement and prayer.
  • How has your faith impacted others around you? Is there someone to whom you can serve as a mentor?
