Spiritual Health

There are plenty of places in scripture that command us to take care of our body because it is the temple of God (Ephesians 2:22). I’m learning that taking care of my body affects my spiritual health in a profound way. I have more energy. I get better rest. Better rest means better quiet times and so on. Millions of Americans head into 2011 with weight loss resolutions. Millions of Americans will fail at their weight loss goals before the end of January.

To make 2011 a healthy, God-honoring year, shift your focus from weight loss to self-control and discipline. Establishing these characteristics early in 2011 will take the weight off and keep the weight off. I’m speaking from experience when I say that focusing on the daily discipline of exercise and the daily self-control of pushing away from the table has made a huge difference. Weight loss goals are good but they have an expiration date. After reaching the goal there is often a let-down and the weight piles back on. Discipline and self-control are the characteristics exhibited daily by a sold-out, follower of Jesus Christ. I am just learning to live a disciplined, self-controlled life. I’ve got a long way to go but I know I can stick with it, and so can you.

Galatians 5:22-23 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
