Sword of the Spirit

The way we communicate with others matters. In one statement, we can lift someone up or bring them down. We can encourage or discourage. We can bring good news or bad. There is power in words.

Just as we communicate with others, Christ wants to communicate with us. He knew the power that words would have, and He gave us the gift of the Bible to communicate with Him, be encouraged by Him and receive strength from Him. For Christians, our greatest weapon is “the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” (Ephesians 6:17).

By opening our Bible, reading it daily, memorizing scripture and having it in our hearts in times of stress, sadness, anger, doubt, fear and confusion, we will be ready to fight life’s battles. Our enemies aren’t movie bad guys; they’re real. We need to understand, depend on and trust in what will work.

Communicating with God through reading His word helps bring joy and peace to our lives. We learn God’s promises and His faithfulness and are filled with strength that can only come with knowing Jesus more intimately.

  • How often do you communicate with God by reading His word? What steps can you take to grow closer to Him by spending more time with Him?
