The Authority on Joy

There was a time when the Nintendo was the must have gaming system.  There was no equal on the shelf. Adults and kids had to have a Nintendo. The joy of Bo Jackson taking a toss sweep in Tecmo Bowl to the endzone or saving the Princess in Super Mario was unmatched. Then came Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, etc., and the original Nintendo disappeared from the shelf.

The beast appears in Revelation and is worshiped because it is believed there is no equal. The world wants us to believe that joy has to be constantly pursued. If we believe this, we will be led astray. We receive messages on a daily basis that tell us what we are or what we have are not enough.  As Christ followers, we don’t have to chase joy through works or material things. We receive it freely from our Savior. 1 Timothy 6:6 says, “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”

The Bible provides the truth about the lasting joy, love and contentment available through Jesus. The world wants us to continue to pursue more while reading the Bible allows us to understand how blessed we truly are. It shows us that Jesus is the ultimate authority on joy because He is the one who created and provides it.

Reflect:

  • Where do you derive your happiness? Where should you derive your happiness?
  • What things other than Jesus are you pursuing to find joy? How can we avoid being led astray?
