The Battle is Not Yours

In 2 Chronicles 20, the nation of Israel faces enormous enemies from Moab, Ammon and Mount Seir. Jehoshaphat, their leader, calls out to the Lord and the Lord responds, “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s…You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you.” The armies of Moab, Ammon and Mount Seir turn on each other, and Israel is left standing victorious. They never lifted a finger in battle, but they won the victory.

Jesus does the same thing for us today. In John 16:33, Jesus promises, “In this world you will have trouble.” He doesn’t say we might have trouble or that the possibility exists. Instead, He assures us that life will bring trouble. Thankfully, He doesn’t stop here. He continues, “But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus has already won victory over anything life can throw our way. He has already fought the cancer, the possibility of divorce, the loss of a job, the financial struggles. Like the Israelites on the battlefield, all we’re asked to do is take our positions and stand firm. Trust in His plan and His power. He will bring deliverance. He will win the victory for us.
