The Weight of Waiting

Our youngest daughter's adoption was supposed to only take nine to 14 months, but months turned into four and a half years. It was like part of our lives was put on hold until we brought our little girl home. Yet time continued to pass. Our 3-year-old daughter was getting older and wondering when her little sister would ever get to come home. 1 Peter 3:17 was a constant reminder that our suffering (the agonizing waiting period) in following God’s will for our family was far better than the suffering involved had we not obeyed Him.

On Dec. 28, 2012, we will celebrate our adopted daughter’s fourth birthday. The wait, which most of the time felt like a “weight,” ended in 2010 when we went to China, met our daughter and brought her home. What seemed to be the hard part was over, but the real difficulty was just beginning. Merging our lives with that of this young child has been excruciating at times. But since arriving in the United States, God has healed her little heart from pain she couldn’t even verbalize. Today, her smile fills every crevice of a room. When she gets tickled and starts laughing, you can’t help but follow suit.

Psalm 119:71 says, “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.” Parenting brings many challenges and blessings, and through growing our family, God has done a work in me that couldn’t have been achieved any other way.

What about you? Is there something that you have heard the whisper of God leading you to do but you have come up with a list of reasons why it wouldn’t be sensible to do so? Are you living under the weight of the wait, until God moves you forward into the next place? Look to Him to be your teacher, revealing things in your life that you need to allow Him to reshape. Find comfort in knowing that His plans for you are for the greater good.
