There’s More to Wisdom Than Age

Proverbs 8

How do you gain wisdom? This is a frequently asked question. Often times an image may pop into mind of an old, wrinkly man sitting next to a fire place spouting off wise sayings. In this way, wisdom is almost always associated with age and experience. The more a person goes through or lives through, the more wise he or she must be. Right? Wrong. The Bible is the truth and in Proverbs 8, it says something much different about wisdom. A person may gain a lot of life lessons from their experiences throughout their life, but God is the only way that anyone can ever be truly wise.

How can this be? True wisdom comes from God because He created it. As seen in verse 24 it tells us, “When there were no oceans, I was given birth…” God made wisdom and used wisdom to form the Earth. Wisdom was what told God where the ocean should stop rolling in and  how tall the mountains should peak, and if we are in God, His wisdom will help us discern where to go and when to stop. His wisdom will guide us through our life. Wisdom is to delight in God and all He has done and made. Wisdom is to listen to God, His callings, teachings and love.

True wisdom is found in God because He created it. We cannot be wise apart from God; we need Him to be wise.

  • What is your definition of wisdom? Are you attempting to gain wisdom apart from God?
  • Is your next step to be a better listener and admirer of God and His wisdom? What is one thing you can do today to take that next step?
  • What is one way you can show others what true wisdom looks like?
