Unexpected Weather

Life is unpredictable. We can make plans or think something will go perfectly. But, something can always go wrong. And when it does, we often find our lives dominated by this tiny little thing that we never saw coming.

In Matthew 8:23, the disciples got in their boat probably expecting to sail smoothly to their destination. Then, “without warning, a furious storm came upon the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat” (Matthew 8:24). This unexpected turn of events dominated the disciples’ view of life. They went from relatively carefree to expecting to die any second.

“Save us! We’re going to drown!” they shouted to Jesus.

The disciples let a change in their circumstances dominate their view of life instead of relying on what is always constant, Jesus. The disciples forgot who Jesus was. They forgot the power in knowing He was right there with them.

Life is always prone to change, sometimes in the worst ways imaginable. But instead of obessing over our changing circumstances, let us focus our hearts on the one who never changes. God is good and He is in control in every situation. When we understand that, we realize we don’t have to be afraid. Jesus’s power to calm the disciples’ storm can help us through any problem we may face.
