Unveil My Eyes

Psalm 119:18 says “Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” Other Bible translations use the phrase “unveil my eyes” or “uncover my eyes.”  If we are reading the words on this page, our eyes are open. The writer of this psalm, King David, is not talking about physically opening our eyes, but doing so spiritually.

When God opens our eyes, we are able to see the secret and hidden things of Scripture. We are able to understand why we need Jesus. When God opens our eyes, we are able to understand and receive Christ’s payment for our sins, and ask Him into our heart as Lord and Savior.

Unless God opens our eyes, we will struggle to live for God and keep His commandments. There is a veil of darkness on our hearts. The defect is not in God’s word but in ourselves. The Bible says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17: 9 -10). The nature of man is totally depraved, a walking dead person who is unable to see or understand the things of God (Ephesians 2:1). To make matters worse, Satan has blinded the minds of people who don’t believe (2 Corinthians 4:4). They are unable to understand the message of the Bible—that Jesus wants to set them free and deliver them.

When we speak to God through prayer, He opens our eyes and help us understand and apply His word. Supernaturally, God will give us wisdom and understanding. As we read the Bible, God will renew our minds, help us to understand, and equip us to live for Him.
