We Are Not Meant For This World

A couple of months ago I experienced one of the worst weeks of my life. It’s said that bad things come in threes, but that week it was more like fives and tens. At the end of it, I thought, “What should I be learning here?”

I did learn from that week. Namely, the Lord reminded me that I’m not in control, and I can’t handle everything myself. As I read Romans 8, I was reminded of that week. It struck me that facing tough times is inevitable in this world, because we aren’t meant for this world. We are meant for Heaven, and until we get there we will experience some pain and suffering. Sometimes it will be caused by something outside of our control and sometimes it will be because of our own sinfulness, but it will come.

While that seems frustrating and sad, our attitude toward pain and suffering should not be one of hopelessness. Instead, our longing should be for Heaven and for Jesus, because we have something incredibly better waiting for us. Until we reach that point, we must know that the Lord uses all of the brokenness in this world to teach us, humble us and remind us that this is not the place we were meant to stay forever.
