When We Need It, God Sends It

Ruth 2:3-9

Psalm 18:28 says, “You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.” In our everyday lives, we often feel unprotected, like we’re driving at night without headlights. We can’t see what is coming and we feel exposed to the darkness that surrounds us. But, like Ruth, when we’re in a time of need, God always sends exactly what we need.

Ruth, in a helpless situation, took action in hopes of finding favor. Ruth 2:3a says, “So she went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters.” Ruth’s faithfulness resulted in God’s favor.

Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled (Ruth 2:8-9).”

Ruth didn’t know picking up leftovers in a field would result in such a bountiful harvest. She most likely felt unprotected and helpless, but she didn’t let that stop her. Ruth remained faithful and followed God’s leading. And by acting on her faith, she saw God provide protection and provision she never expected.
