Who’s going to fill your shoes?

Moses led the people out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, and around the desert for 40 years. It was finally time for Israel to enter the promised land, but Moses’ time as their leader was up. God told him he would die soon.

What a sobering thought that no matter how hard we work for the Lord here on earth, one day we, too, will die, and someone else will need to fill the space we leave behind. Moses took the information and rather than dwell on his missing out, he sought to prepare Israel’s next leader.

One day, someone else will need to fill the space we leave behind.

What are we doing to prepare a successor to make sure our ministry continues long after we have gone to be with the Lord?

The Bible gives us many instructions on preparing Christians coming up under us. In Titus 2:3-5, older women are told to teach the younger how to love and care for their families. In Deuteronomy 11:19, we are told to teach our children while we work, walk along, and lie down along side them.

Connecting to a church family opens up even more opportunities to train those coming behind us. We get the opportunity to teach children in KidSpring or lead students at Fuse. Joining a NewSpring Group can open opportunities to invest in others and encourage newer Christians in their walk.

Training up spiritual leaders won’t happen by accident. How can we be intentional in our own walk to bring others up behind us to continue the work the way Moses did?

  • We may not know when, but the day is coming when we will need to pass the torch. What is one thing you’re doing to make sure you have someone equipped to pass that torch to?
  • Is there someone who equipped you to serve God? What is one thing they did, and what can you do today to replicate that in someone else’s life?
  • What is one way you can connect at church through serving or a NewSpring Group to help prepare those coming after you in ministry?
