Who’s Greater

We’ve all tried to one up someone at some point in our lives. Whether it was in a video game, sports, or telling a story, we all want to be the greatest at something.

The disciples tried to one up each other the same way. Luke 22 opens with the disciples arguing with each other, trying to see who was the greatest. They even came to Jesus to see who He’d name as the greatest in their group!

Jesus did not hesitate to stop the disciples’ dispute, and His response took the disciples by surprise. He said, “the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves” (v. 26). Basically, Jesus told His disciples that the youngest person and the biggest servant would be the greatest ruler and leader of them all.

God doesn’t want us to live a “one up” life, working to always beat this or that person. Instead, God wants us to live a “step up” life, believing that God is the greatest and serving Him with all we’ve got!

  • What area of your life do you need to stop “one-upping” and start serving in?
  • Do you trust God to use you for greatness?
