Respecting God’s Authority

Overview: 1 Samuel 24-26, Luke 15:11-32

While on the run from the murderous King Saul, David has two opportunities to kill him. But out of respect for God’s authority, David refuses to kill Saul, instead choosing to honor God’s timing for turning the kingdom of Israel over to him.

As he continues his journey to Jerusalem, Jesus tells the story of the prodigal son to illustrate God’s desire for us to repent and turn to Him.

Observation and Activation
“‘For this, my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.” - Luke 15:24

David refused to kill Saul even when it appeared God was providing him the opportunity because he was humble enough to not usurp God’s authority. Likewise, the younger son realized he had sinned against his father and returned to his authority with humility. He did not expect the father’s joyful response, and the older brother was jealous.

But Jesus assures us that God is waiting to welcome the repentant sinner into His household, and will do so with great joy. Do you respect God’s authority enough to trust His timing and follow His forgiveness?
