Numbers 12, Numbers 13, and Numbers 14

As Israel approached the Promised Land, Moses sent spies into Canaan to explore the land. As the twelve men explored Canaan, they found that it was flowing with milk and honey. But the fruit of the land wasn’t the only large thing there- the land was full of giants descended from the Nephilim (see Genesis 6:4).

When they returned to Moses, ten men reported that they couldn’t conquer the well-fortified cities that were full of giants. But Caleb and Joshua trusted the Lord and encouraged them with His power (Numbers 14:7-8).

After hearing the report of the spies, many of the Israelites were afraid and doubted the Lord’s power. They complained and turned their hearts back to Egypt. Because of this rebellion, the Lord sentenced Israel to 40 years of wandering in the wilderness.

Mark 4:21-41

This passage contains parables that encourage the reader to trust in Jesus’ power and authority.

In the first parable, Jesus compares the kingdom of God to a lamp that brightens a dark room. This story encourages and challenges the listener that every secret part of their life will come into the light.

Jesus explains the kingdom of God in the parable of the mustard seed. The mustard seed is the tiniest of all seeds that, when planted, can grow into a plant that reaches up to 20 feet in height. This metaphor highlights the humble beginnings that lead to the gradual and significant growth of the kingdom.

Jesus and his disciples are in a boat when a great storm arises. The disciples are terrified while Jesus sleeps. They wake Jesus up in a panic and He commands the storm to calm with the words, “Peace! Be still!”
