Jesus’ Sacrifice For Our Sins

Deuteronomy 26-27

Deuteronomy 26 continues with the presentation of laws and rules for living in the land. All those who are the Lord’s children must follow His decrees, and He will provide for them. The Lord promised His chosen people that if they follow His rules, they will prosper.

In Deuteronomy 27, Moses looks ahead to a covenant ceremony after Israel has arrived in the Promised Land. He commands the people to set up an altar for sacrifices and a place to write these laws.

There was a division of the tribes between two mountains. In this ceremony, Israel hears the blessings and curses for keeping or breaking the law. This ceremony stood as a witness between the Lord and Israel that they agreed to the terms of the covenant between them.

Mark 15:21-47

After being beaten and mocked, Jesus was too weak to carry His cross. Simon of Cyrene, father of Rufus (see Romans 16:13) carried it to Golgotha. Jesus was crucified and mocked with a sign hung above His head inscribed “The King of the Jews.”

Every detail Mark includes shows how Jesus fulfills the prophecy of Psalm 22. Castling lots and dividing his clothes fulfilled Psalm 22:18. When Jesus cried out, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” he uses Psalm 22:1 to express his anguish to God.

Jesus took His last breath and the veil of the temple tore into two, from top to bottom. This symbolizes God tearing down the wall of separation between Himself and man from heaven to earth (Hebrews 10:19-20).

Make It Personal
  • Jesus knew that He would have to suffer so that we can have eternity in heaven. Have you responded to Jesus’ offer of salvation yet?
  • How does it change your perception of suffering to know that God is in control and that Jesus comforts us one who has also suffered?
