Genesis 48, Genesis 49, and Genesis 50

As Jacob prepares to die, he looks to pass on the covenantal promises and blessings of God Almighty (“El Shaddai” in Hebrew) that his fathers Abraham and Isaac have carried before him. Jacob’s blessings for Judah and Joseph (through his son Ephraim) stand out from his blessings for his other ten sons. This will become especially important in future generations as leadership eventually passes from Ephraim’s descendants to Judah’s (Psalm 78:67-72).

After Jacob dies, Joseph’s forgiveness and restoration to his brothers are completed with his speech in Genesis 50:19-21. As Joseph nears death, the author of Genesis points forward to the coming Exodus of Israel and his descendants from Egypt to the land that God promised to Abraham.

“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.” - Genesis 50:20-21
Matthew 15:1-20

As Jesus’ fame and ministry continue to grow in the Galilee region, the Pharisees and scribes dispatch more teachers from Jerusalem to challenge Jesus and his disciples. In response to a dispute about ritual washings, Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for their hypocrisy.

Jesus has two main problems with their teachings. First, they have elevated their own traditions over the word of God to their own financial benefit. Second, the Pharisees’ righteousness is external and is more concerned with what other people think than the matters of the heart. Jesus shows that the altar of the heart is the true test of being rooted in the Father (Matthew 15:13).

Make It Personal
  • What events from your life can you see that the enemy meant for evil, but God used it for good? As you pray, ask God to reveal to you ways He is still working in your life today.
  • Are there any areas of your life where you are more concerned with what other people think than what God thinks?
  • Pray this Psalm back to God, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (Psalm 139:23-24)
