Behind The Music Was A Cry For Help

Tilman Acker's Story

The music was a prayer before it became a song.

First, Tilman Acker had to come face-to-face with his brokenness.

At a New Year’s party with friends, his guard down after a night of drinking, he gave in to sexual sin.

The decision cost him his job as a worship leader at NewSpring Church.

The only way forward was to put his eyes on Jesus, Tilman says.

"Eyes on You'' was basically my prayer, pretty much, for myself.

The lyric of "Eyes on You,” a song he’d started writing months before and never finished, suddenly became the cry of his heart.

Tilman remembers pleading with Jesus, "If you don’t come to help me out every single day, then I’m not going to be able to do every single day."

"That song was giving myself some encouragement at a time when everything didn’t look good for me,” he says.

Overcoming Sin

Tilman asked Jesus into his life at 18 at Gauntlet, NewSpring’s student ministry summer camp.

Until that decision, Tilman’s life had been all about parties, sex and drugs, which he sold and used.

Tilman joined the Fuse worship band soon after Jesus saved him. There, he was surrounded by men that stood by him as he wrestled with what following Christ looked like and struggled to break free of his past.

After the New Years incident, Tilman saw with fresh eyes the undeserved, unbelievable grace God had given him. That included his salvation, his musical gift and the love of his church family.

Tilman realized that a victorious life comes from focusing on Jesus and the power of His grace and forgiveness.

Daily Grace

It was during this yearlong season of renewal that Tilman came to discover what the song really needed to say.

Tilman's journey of repentance resulted in a return to leading worship at NewSpring, along with the release of the completed track "Eyes on You."

"It was basically my prayer, pretty much, for myself,” he says. "The only way I can get what God promised me is to keep my eyes open and say, ‘This is the day I’m going to follow Jesus. I’m only going to worry about right now.’"
