Session 3

The Bible Still Matters Today

Read: 2 Peter 1:12-21

Jesus said, “The reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

Then Pilate, the governor of the day, asked Him, “What is truth?” (John 18:37-38)

In today’s culture, just as in Jesus’ day, truth is often interpreted as a relative term. Societies defend ideas like, “What’s true for you may not be true for me.” Friends encourage each other, “Just follow your heart and you can’t go wrong.” Usually, our personal preferences drive these thoughts and we simply want the people around us to agree with us so we can keep doing what we want.

The truth of something can be known only when it’s compared with something else. The Bible is the absolute standard of truth by which all other truth can be measured. The Bible is the reliable word of God that shows us who Jesus is. Peter reminded the early church of the Gospel’s truth during a time when many others claimed to know the “real” truth.

As we compare other ideas to the truth of Jesus revealed in the Bible, remember:

  • The Bible is not a book of myths. It’s a true account of eyewitness testimonies.
  • The Holy Spirit inspired the writers of the Bible, guiding them like the wind drives a ship on the ocean.
  • The Bible has withstood the test of time. For thousands of years, it has been recognized as one of the primary ways God reveals truth!

Reflect:

  • What is one way you’ve seen the truth in the Bible guide your life?
  • How can you apply the truth of the Bible to your life this week?
