Session 12

When the right thing is not the easy thing

Read: Matthew 1:18-25

Joseph had a choice to make when he discovered Mary was pregnant. He could publicly divorce Mary, which would have led to Mary being stoned. Or, he could divorce Mary quietly.

Joseph did not see a third option, but God did.

Matthew 1:20 says, “But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.’”

God gave Joseph the option to go through with the wedding. This wouldn’t have been easy for Joseph. In their culture, marrying Mary would require more faith than getting a divorce.

When we have a difficult choice to make, there will often be a leap of faith involved. Part of what makes a decision difficult is that it takes us out of our comfort zones.

For example, when an opportunity to be generous comes, it is easy to find a reason to say no. The kids need new clothes. Tuition is due. Business is slow. All of these are respectful reasons people would understand.

So how do we know when to say no and when we, like Joseph, need to take a step of faith and say yes?

What’s easy is not always right. And what’s right is not always what’s easy. As we pray and listen to God, He will guide us to the right option. It might be something we’ve already considered. Or, like He did with Joseph, God might lead us to a faith-filled option we never knew was possible.

Reflect:

  • When was the last time you had to make a difficult choice? How did you arrive at your decision?
  • What decisions are you facing this week that will require greater faith? Take some time to pray and ask God what He would have you do.
