Session 4

Clear and Simple

Read: Deuteronomy 10:12, Matthew 11:28-30

“And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?” Deuteronomy 10:12

Have you ever been around someone whose gift is taking a simple task and complicating it? It seems they try to make everything difficult. Christ-followers tend to make things complicated too, don’t we? God provides some simple, clear guidelines for success in our life, but we are never satisfied with “clear and simple.” We’ll add and add and add complication to our life and force out the essentials that God has clearly called us to do. When we’re challenged to begin doing something we’re clearly commanded in scripture to do, such as serve, we make excuses and blame our situation on busyness, a child’s baseball game, the office, or whatever.

How much of what we do every day has God actually asked us to do? How much of what we do every day is just us cramming a bunch of extra stuff into our lives? When we focus on things that God didn’t ask us to do, the result is striving, busyness, disappointment and emptiness.

Perhaps it’s time to redefine success. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give your rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Jesus has already figured our life out for us. We must simply trust Him and do what He asks us to do.
