Everyone Has A Master

From 2 Peter: An 8-Day Devotional

We all have that one food from our favorite restaurant that we can’t get enough of. Maybe it’s a certain entree or an especially delicious dessert item. Whenever we’re nearby, we think about that dish and we’re tempted to eat at that restaurant. It’s as if we became addicted to it when we first experienced it, and we always want to go back.

Sometimes certain sins have that sort of grip on us. We live in a world that makes it look so good. We get involved expecting pleasure, but it begins to take more control of our thoughts and our actions. Peter tells us that we are slaves to whatever has mastered us. If it is sin that has mastered us, it can never fill us the way it promises.

The good news is that there is something far more powerful than the grip of sin. This “something” is actually Someone who fulfills all the promises He makes. When Jesus fills us, we are filled forever. It seems too good to be true doesn’t it?

Freedom from being a slave to sin is found in a relationship with Jesus. This does not mean that we won’t be tempted by sins that offer temporary pleasure. It means that we know whom we can run to for freedom and lasting fulfillment.

Reflect:

  • Is there a sin that is mastering you, controlling your thoughts or actions?
  • Do you believe that Jesus offers freedom from that sin and He can fulfill you?
  • God never asks us to fight sin alone. Ask a Christian friend to help you say “no” to sin and “yes” to Jesus.
