Session 40

Four ways the husband and wife bond is unlike any other

From Genesis: A 7-Week Devotional

At McGill University Medical Center, in Montreal, Donald Hebb isolated volunteers and limited stimulation to their senses. His experiment was cut short as participants became anxious, emotional, unable to perform academically and began hallucinating. Even if all our survival needs are met, we still need people.

God made a special companion for Adam: a wife. God took Adam’s rib and made Eve. “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). When God married Adam and Eve, He brought Adam something that was missing.

What’s unique and important about the companionship of a husband and wife?

1. It involves intimate knowledge.

The physical closeness and time spent together develops a knowledge of each other unlike any other. Knowing their strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, some have learned to predict the other’s choices and finish their thoughts. When someone knows you like this and still wants to be with you, that’s companionship to be thankful for.

2. It means having a constant helper.

Commitment to marriage means committing to helping one’s spouse. Serving each other brings joy and lifts burdens. In day to day tasks, and life altering situations, this companionship means you will get through it together.

3. It means having fun.

Imagine the fun Adam and Eve had. Everything was new. They were the ultimate explorers. The fun of marriage is unique. There are inside jokes and memories that make spouses laugh over and over. Nighttime, sleep deprivation, new babies, and first cooking experiences make incredible stories!

4. It brings you closer to Jesus.

A husband and wife have the potential to bring each other and others closer to Jesus. As we accept, serve, and have fun with our spouse, our companionship brings glory to God.

Reflect:

  • Are you closer now in your marriage than you have ever been? Why or why not?
  • Is there something getting in the way of your companionship?
  • What is one thing you can do to strengthen your relationship?
