We all love a good origin story. It’s the reason we read celebrity biographies and line-up for the latest Star Wars prequel.
We’re drawn to the backstory because we’re all born with a curiosity about why things are the way they are. A good origin story makes sense of a person’s actions and intentions. How did Clark Kent discover he had super powers? What pushed Peter Parker to become Spider-Man?
Those answers explain Spider-Man’s motivation to scale buildings and Superman’s desire to fight for truth, justice, and the American way.
We also have an origin story, and it’s found in Genesis, the first book of the Bible. Genesis tells us how the world began, where we came from, and what led to the brokenness we experience today.
In Genesis, we learn who God is and who we are in relationship to Him. And through Genesis, we see how we are part of a bigger story God has been writing since the beginning of time.
