Why leadership isn’t all about the title

We all like to know that our boss or the authority over us is pleased, and it means even more when they take the time to share that in front of other people.

In Deuteronomy 31:1-8, Moses praises Joshua in front of the people and charges him with leading the nation of Israel. Moses did not build himself up or list all of his own accomplishments. Rather, Moses took the time to use his influence to build up a new leader reminding him to take a step of faith and trust that the Lord would be with him.

The Israelites could trust in Joshua’s wisdom, courage, and affection for them based on God’s favor. Joshua and the Israelites could be strong and courageous in God’s favor and protection (Deuteronomy 31:7-8). Moses gives Joshua encouragement to bring him confidence in an area Joshua was likely somewhat intimidated in. Moses’ approval increased Joshua’s influence among the people. That’s why it is important to encourage people privately and publicly like Moses did.

Leadership is not a title; it’s about influence.

Leadership is not a title; it’s about influence. Each of us has a circle of influence. Maybe it’s leading our home or a small group, coaching a team, encouraging our spouse in front of our friends, or even encouraging a server at a restaurant.

Let’s pray to have open eyes for opportunities to encourage someone publicly today.
