Mary’s Magnificent Song

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” - Luke 1:46-47

Mary received extraordinary news. The baby in her womb would be the very Son of God and Savior of the world. What an overwhelming show of God’s favor and blessing!

In response, Mary worshiped.

Rather than boasting about all God would do for her and through her, she humbled herself and magnified the greatness of God. She rejoiced in God as her Savior and reflected on His mercy towards her. She praised God for His power and His holiness. Even though this all seemed too wonderful to be true, she believed that God could and would do what He said.

Mary did not see God’s blessing and favor as primarily about her. Rather, she recognized that God would use her as a vessel to bring His Savior into the world: a gift for all, not just for her alone. Because of Christ, we have also received this “too wonderful to be true” kind of favor from God. 

Take a moment to reflect on God’s favor and blessing in your life. As a child of God, you are blessed. God has shown you great favor. God desires to use you as a vessel to bless other people. Like Mary, set your heart towards praise and worship. Respond by magnifying our great God!
