Session 3

God Still Speaks

From Rich Toward God

Have you ever been overwhelmed by the sheer amount of noise in our world today? From tons of advertisements to loud opinions in culture to constant distractions on our screens, it can be hard to focus on what truly matters. When we have the volume turned up on everything around us, it might feel like God is silent—but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

When Samuel heard the voice of God, he didn’t realize it was God who was speaking to him at first. He went to his mentor, a priest named Eli, assuming that it was him who called out. But Eli shared powerful wisdom, telling Samuel to listen again for the voice of God—and to respond, “I am listening!” when he heard it.

God is still speaking today. Are our ears tuned to listen? Or are we distracted by earthly things? It is a powerful thing to know and experience the voice of God. In order to experience this gift, we must be willing to turn down the volume on the rest of our lives, learning how to identify His voice so that we can respond to it with obedience.

In John 10:27, Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” As followers of God, we get the incredible privilege to not only hear His voice, but to be known and loved by Him. Listening to God—and responding to Him—deepens our relationship with Him and brings great joy to our everyday lives. Let’s be people who are willing to quiet everything else so that we can learn the sound of our Good Shepherd’s voice.

REFLECT

  1. Have you removed distractions so that you can hear God speak?
  2. How will you respond the next time you hear God’s voice?
