Session 4

Seek First

From Rich Toward God

Have you ever wandered through a flower garden, taking in the vivid colors and beautiful blooms? Or perhaps you’ve watched a bird hop along after a rainstorm, eating worms and enjoying the fresh air. Sometimes, we learn valuable lessons from the smallest moments. And as Jesus points out in the Sermon on the Mount, nature offers us a beautiful picture of what it looks like to trust God.

Just as God provides food for the birds and clothes the flowers in stunning colors, He will provide for His people. But this truth is easy to forget. We often spend our time worrying about the future—how we’ll make enough money, what will happen in our relationships, or if we’ll be healthy in the years ahead. We can fall into the trap of thinking it’s all up to us. And while it’s true that we are called to work (2 Thess. 3:10), we are not called to worry about life’s necessities. We’re held in the hands of a God who is more than able to provide for us.

When we are tempted to worry, Jesus offers a powerful reframe: prioritize God and His kingdom over any need we have, and the rest will be added to us. Worry is an attempt at controlling our own lives. But when we release control, we can recognize that God is in control of our provision, and He is a good Father. We don’t have to spend our days filled with anxiety. God will give us what we need. What a powerful promise to rest in today!

REFLECT

  1. Psalm 9:10 tells us God will not forsake those who seek Him. What does it look like to seek first the kingdom of God?
  2. Has anxiety about money ever gotten in the way of your relationship with God?
