Our Beliefs

Jesus is the head of our church, and His Word is the standard for how we live—as individuals and as God’s family—for the glory of God. Below are brief statements for each of the essential Christian beliefs that we hold as a church and that are foundational to following Jesus in loving, faith-filled obedience.

The Bible

The Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments, is the infallible, inspired word of God. Written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Bible is the ultimate source of doctrine, instruction, correction, and reproof.

The Trinity

God is one. Though one in essence, He exists co-equally and eternally in three persons as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Humanity

Because humans are made in the image of God, all human life is sacred. Every person, regardless of status, ethnicity, color, age, stage of development, mental or physical capacity, or level of self-awareness, is sacred and therefore must be treated with special, unique dignity and worth.

Marriage and Sexuality

Since we are created in the image of God, our call is to reflect His character in all areas of life, including the way we understand and live out marriage and sexuality. Marriage was instituted by God as a sacred lifelong union between one man and one woman, and God designed sex to be expressed within that lifetime covenant commitment.

Sin and Salvation

Although designed by God for fullness of life and fellowship with Him, the first humans alienated themselves from God through disobedience. As a result, all human beings are born with a sinful nature and choose to sin against God. By trusting Jesus, we are saved from the curse and penalty of sin and can enjoy an abundant, eternal life that begins when we believe.

The Church

The Church is not a building but rather a people, saved, filled by the Spirit, and set apart to fulfill God’s mission of advancing the kingdom of heaven on the earth. Jesus Christ is the head of the Church; the Church is Christ’s body. Participation in the body of Christ includes sharing the gospel, practicing the ordinances of baptism and communion, and submitting to the shepherding care of our pastors.

Baptism

Baptism is one of two ordinances of the Church. Baptism symbolizes our union with Jesus in death and burial and the act of coming out of the water symbolizes our union with Christ’s resurrection. Baptism identifies us as followers of Christ and serves as our public profession of faith in Him. It is our first act of obedience as a disciple of Christ and is our initiation into the family of God. Though not necessary for salvation, we see a precedent in Scripture that those who receive Christ are baptized soon after. Because we want to follow the example of Jesus’ baptism and all other baptisms in the New Testament, and because of its symbolic association with death, burial, and resurrection, NewSpring practices baptism by immersion in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Baptism by immersion after salvation is required for membership.

Communion

Communion is one of two ordinances of the Church. NewSpring teaches that Communion remembers and celebrates the work of Christ and declares the gospel until He comes. When we take Communion, we are spiritually nourished as we commune with Christ and His people.

Discipleship

Discipleship describes the process of following Jesus daily. Salvation is just the beginning of our new life in Christ. While salvation is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by a Christian’s self-effort, it is through confession and repentance that a Christian continues to grow into the likeness of Jesus Christ through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit. NewSpring teaches that our spiritual life is strengthened through an everyday relationship with Jesus through spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible reading, and Christian fellowship. Engaging in discipleship offerings such as groups, classes, and serving on a team are important aspects of participation in the life of NewSpring Church.

Financial Stewardship

Financial Stewardship includes the biblical principles of tithing, offerings, and generosity. Tithing is the practice of bringing the first tenth of our gross income to our local church. Tithing is an acknowledgement that God is the owner of all and we are dependent on Him. The discipline of tithing teaches us to trust God’s provision and breaks the back of greed in our lives. When we obediently bring our tithe to the Church, our hearts are trained to be more like Christ’s. While we may not see an immediate financial return, we are promised blessings as we obediently practice this discipline.

We believe Jesus Christ will return to Earth personally and visibly according to the promises in Scripture. His return will be for the purpose of establishing His absolute rule and authority on the earth.
