God brought His people out of captivity in dramatic fashion. After parting the Red Sea and destroying their captors, God’s people walked victoriously into the promised land! Well, not quite.
Numbers is the story of Israel’s 40-year journey through the wilderness to the promised land. As they wandered, the sense of adventure wore off. They faced temptation and hardship. They doubted and whined. But through it all, God was with them, guiding and sustaining them.
Through the wilderness, God instills important lessons in His people. He teaches them to trust Him, not other people, when they face a crisis. He demonstrates that He will provide for their needs. And, He shows them how to worship according to His instruction.
Like Israel, we are passing through a wilderness on our way to our forever home with Jesus. The Holy Spirit guides us one step at a time, just like God’s presence led them one day at a time.
