The Holy Spirit In Modern Times

From Spirit: Helper, Guide, God

Many people today think that the miracles we read about in the Bible did not happen, let alone still happen today. The truth is, they did happen, and they still do. How do we know this? Because Jesus himself told us they would happen. Before Jesus left Earth to go to heaven in Mark 16:15-18, He sent the disciples to go into the world and proclaim the Gospel. He said, “whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues, they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Through these verses, Jesus proclaims that as we as believers spread the gospel, people will accept him and at that moment receive the Holy Spirit. Because the Holy Spirit lives inside of them, he promises that miracles will happen!

You may be asking, “if these so called miracles are still happening, why am I not seeing them?” I would argue that they are. Everyday by the Holy Spirit people are physically healed, freed from demonic influences, speaking in tongues, and many more.

The goal of spiritual gifting is to build up the church above anything else. If you aren’t sure what your God given gifts are, just ask him. If there’s something you want to receive, or are interested in learning more, ask God to give it to you. But don’t obsess over it. He is a good Father and He knows what you need. Jesus is proof of that, and so is the Holy Spirit. With them you’ve got what you need.
