Session 6
The Holy Spirit Leads Us To Truth and Freedom
From Spirit: Helper, Guide, God
“Truth” today is a broad and sometimes frustrating topic. Because it seems like truth means something different to everyone, right? Let’s lay aside the confusion of the world & jump right into the simple reality of the Bible that says that truth is a person and that person is the Holy Spirit.
In John 16, Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit is coming after he goes to be with the Father and that the Holy Spirit will be our comforter. He’s the one to constantly tell us, at all times, who we really are and in turn lead us away from lies and right to His truth. This is great news for imperfect people like you and I. Why? Because if we have the Holy Spirit, we have a person of Truth shouting over all the lies that try to tell us who we are as a result of our failure, pain and sin.
Here’s the amazing part. The Bible tells us what the benefits of the Spirit are and goes on to list some pretty great things - stuff we all want to experience in our lives. But these benefits flow from who we are and not what we do. God calls us to rest in Him and take true delight in His Holy Spirit. If we do, the fruits of the Spirit that Galatians 5:22-23 will flow from our lives as natural as rain flows from a cloud. Our part in all this is not to go and try to be the fruits of the Spirit. That’s religion. That ends poorly. Our part is to just say yes to what God has already given us through His Spirit. Freedom is knowing you don’t need a thing because of what Jesus has given you in the Holy Spirit. Let Truth set you free. Every lie is just a counterfeit promise that will leave nothing but sadness in our soul. Truth is a promise that results in real joy.
When we remember who are in Christ our mind is renewed. When our mind is renewed our life looks more and more like the life of Jesus and that is what we were made for.
