Session 2

We Can Have More of The Holy Spirit

From Spirit: Helper, Guide, God

As followers of Christ, we received the Holy Spirit the moment we were saved. This (just like our salvation through Jesus) is a one time gig. In other words, we cannot lose the Holy Spirit. Once the Spirit lives in us, nothing can separate us from Him.

So is asking God “to be filled with His Spirit” wrong? The heart behind it is right, but we might not fully understand what needs to happen. Although we have the Holy Spirit living in our hearts and leading us, most of us have not given Him full control. We have some things in our hearts that we hold on to so hard that it is limiting us, and ultimately, limiting how God wants to use us. It can be small like what we watch on TV, a little jealousy towards our friends, or something bigger like sexual sin. Removing these things from our hearts with God’s help gives room for the Holy Spirit to fill us and work in us.

The only way we can accomplish this is by talking to our Heavenly Father. That is done through prayer, and reading His Word (aka the Bible). Just like with our friendships, if we want a deeper relationship with our friends, we need to talk to each other. We get to do the same with our God, not because we HAVE TO do anything but because we ARE His children. Pray for a renewing and deeper understanding of His Spirit. Ask Him to reveal to you the things that are taking up room in your heart. If you have faith and believe He will, then He will fill you with his Spirit.
