Session 7
Read and Listen
From Presence: With Us. In Us. Through Us.
Read: 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Maybe you have heard your Fuse Pastor say, “You should wake up in the morning and read your Bible!” But like, why? Does it transform you into a super Christian or something? Nah. But it will transform your mind as you begin your day (Romans 12:2).
The Bible is more than a book. It's God’s very breath and heart for us in plain sight. We receive the word of God every time we place our eyes on scripture. As we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit brings things to light for our benefit (Hebrews 4:12). Whether that is something about our identity in God, the great plans He has for us, or the way He deeply cares for what is currently breaking our hearts. No, this does not mean that when we open our Bibles it’s going to tell us who we’re going to marry or go to college! But God does speak through His word, and it’s our part to listen for His voice and respond to it. When we read God's word, we walk away looking and sounding a little more like Jesus.
Let’s say your mom called you on the phone today, but you didn’t have her number saved. You would still know it’s your mom when you pick up the phone because you know her voice. You know her voice because you have spent time with her and overtime you have memorized what she sounds like. Same with God. Spending time with God allows us to learn what His voice sounds like.
Listening for God’s voice does not mean waiting for thunder, lightning strikes, and a deep voice speaking to us from the sky. God’s voice is often more of a whisper than it is a shout. Next time you wake up in the morning to have your quiet time, ask God to speak to you through His word. Then wake up the next morning and do it again. He’ll start to show you things, and you’ll begin to hear His voice.
