Session 5
Slow Down and Make Space
From Presence: With Us. In Us. Through Us.
Read: James 4:8
Ok take a deep breath in...now let it out.
This is the posture we should all have when we spend time with God, relaxed. We get to enjoy God’s presence when we eliminate our constant hurrying and make time for Him throughout our day.
When you see your friend in the hallway in between class change, it’s hard to get a real good conversation in because you’re so rushed to get to your next class. You tell them everything that just happened at lunch briefly, but you don’t have time to go into detail or hear what they think because that bell is about to ring and you don’t want to be late. It’s funny how our time with God can look just like this; like a minute in passing.
But when we create space in our day to hang out with God, you can actually talk. When we pour out our hearts to Him, but we don’t create space for Him to talk back, we can sometimes leave our quiet times wondering why did He not show up and speak? The problem is not that He didn’t show up, because He definitely did. We just couldn’t be still long enough to listen, because we had to go.
Creating space for God is us accepting God’s invitation into His presence. As we sit with Him in a relaxed posture, God reveals Himself to us and we can experience His presence with us.
Ask God to slow you down next time you have your quiet time. Get up 15 minutes earlier than you normally would to hear from God and read the Bible. Play some worship music before you pray or crack open that Bible. Feel His presence in your room, car, or Starbucks table as you unwind.
Just slow down and make space.
