Session 2
God is CREATOR
From The Gospel: Five Words You Need to Know
READ:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” —Genesis 1:1
“I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” —Psalm 139:14
“Create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within me.” —Psalm 51:10
“Even when we were dead in our trespasses, (God) made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved”. —Ephesians 2:5
“Creator” is the first name God reveals to us about Himself in scripture. Genesis 1:1, the first chapter and the first verse in the Bible show us who our God is. He is CREATOR. He is not “a” creator or someone who simply “creates,” He is THE Creator, because “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:3). Our God brought to life all things out of nothing. That is how powerful He is. In fact, when this text was originally written in Hebrew, the name given to God in Genesis is “Elohim.” Translated, this means “Strong One.” All that God created shows how awesome He is. Psalm 19:1–2 says that all of creation “pours forth speech” about how great God is. This means creation is constantly shouting to all those who see it, saying “Look! There is a God and He is responsible for all of this!” Have you ever looked at a sunset and had to stop and stare for a minute? That’s creation trying to get our attention to point us toward God. Creation wants for us to see God as He is: Creator.
And so God as Creator was first revealed to us through our surroundings: the plants, water, sun and mountains. But it does not end there. Psalm 139 and Psalm 51:10 shows us that God not only created, but He is constantly creating. You and I are God’s most prized creation. Read Psalm 139:14–16 again. Notice the detail that is implied there? We were knitted together. Have you ever seen someone knit or weave? It’s not the easiest process. God took great detail in creating us. The universe He spoke into existence, but when it came to His children, He got more involved, more intimate. And so, He wove us together before anyone else even knew we existed. We are wonderfully made.
Want to know what is even more unbelievable? God continues to speak life in us after that. Be- cause from birth you and I are sinful. Sin is what separates us from God and leads to death. We cannot do anything about it and we cannot fix ourselves. And so, once again, God takes dead things and creates life for them. For “even when we were dead in our trespasses, (God) made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” He creates something out of nothing— life from death. Why? Because it’s who He is! It is His very essence. He created and He continues to create. Our God is CREATOR.
RESPOND:
• What do you see in your daily surroundings that show you God is Creator?
• What does it mean to you that you are fearfully and wonderfully made?
• What does it mean for God to “Create a pure heart”? Do you see evidence of this in your own life?
